Settings explainedGrain Effect and Color Chrome Effect explainedWhat Fujifilm's Grain Effect, Color Chrome Effect and Color Chrome FX Blue do to a JPEG, which bodies have them, and how recipes use them.

Three settings turn up in almost every recipe and are hard to judge on the rear screen. Grain Effect adds texture. Color Chrome Effect and Color Chrome FX Blue add depth to strong colours. All three are part of JPEG and HEIF processing; a RAW file only notes them.

Grain Effect

Off, Weak or Strong. From the X-Pro3 generation on, you also choose a size, Small or Large. So "Grain: Weak, Small" needs a body with the size option. On older cameras, set Weak and move on.

Grain is baked into the JPEG and can't be taken out later. Strong and Large together shows clearly on a phone screen; Weak and Small mostly shows when you zoom in. If you're unsure, go weaker, or shoot RAW as well so you can convert again (see JPEG vs RAW).

Color Chrome Effect

Off, Weak or Strong. It adds tonal range to highly saturated colours, the reds, yellows and greens that otherwise go flat and blocky. A red jacket keeps its folds; a bed of flowers keeps its shapes. In muted scenes you'll barely see it, and it does nothing in black and white. On X series cameras it arrived with the X-T3.

Color Chrome FX Blue

The same idea for blues: deeper, more graded skies and water. It arrived with the X-Pro3 in 2019, so the X-T3 and X-T30 don't have it. On a clear day it's the most visible of the three. Recipes that want pale, faded skies switch it off.

How recipes use them

Film-look recipes usually add some grain and a little Color Chrome. Clean, modern looks often turn grain off. If your camera lacks one of these settings, set the rest and leave that line out. Grain and FX Blue change the feel more than the colour, so the look mostly survives. The film simulation matters far more; if you're new to them, start with the beginner's guide.
